How to Avoid Getting Scammed Again After a Data Breach

When a company’s security is compromised, your personal information may be exposed, putting you at risk for identity theft and fraud. Unfortunately, scammers take advantage of this by offering fake “solutions” or “protection” services that only make matters worse.

At TVFCU, we want you to feel confident about protecting your identity and your money. Here’s what you need to know.

What Is the Data Breach Remedy Scam?

This scam targets people who’ve been told their personal information may have been part of a data breach. Scammers pretend to be from government agencies, credit bureaus, or cybersecurity companies. They’ll offer services like credit monitoring, identity theft insurance, or account recovery—often for a high fee.

In many cases, these “services” don’t exist. Scammers may simply collect more of your personal information to commit identity theft or drain your accounts.

Example of the Scam

Natalie receives an email from a so-called cybersecurity firm warning her that her personal information is in danger. The message promises a “comprehensive identity protection plan” for a monthly fee. Concerned, she signs up—only to find out the company is fake, and her credit card is being charged without her permission.

Tips for Protecting Yourself

  • Be cautious with unsolicited offers. Don’t trust offers for identity protection services that arrive by phone, email, or text.
  • Avoid suspicious links. If you get a message about a data breach, go directly to the official company’s website for updates.
  • Verify the source. If someone claims to represent a government agency, credit bureau, or cybersecurity firm, confirm their identity before sharing any personal information.
  • Take protective steps. Consider placing a fraud alert or credit freeze on your credit report to help block scammers from opening accounts in your name.
