Our Birthday, Your Gift: Celebrating 90 Years of TVFCU
Abbey Butte
Birthdays usually mean receiving gifts, but for our 90th birthday, we figured the presents should go to you.
For 90 years, Tennessee Valley Federal Credit Union has been built around a simple idea: people helping people. Since 1936, our members have trusted us through first savings accounts, first car loans, growing families, new businesses and countless moments in between. While a lot has changed over the last nine decades, one thing hasn’t: our members have always been at the center of our story.
So as we celebrate turning 90, we’re celebrating the people who got us here.
What We’re Up To
Throughout the year, we’re giving back with surprises, giveaways and experiences created for our members.
On June 5, our official birthday, every TVFCU branch will join the birthday celebration with fun treats and giveaways for members (while supplies last). Gifts and surprises will vary by location, but every branch will be part of making the day feel a little more special.
We’ll also mark the milestone with a ribbon-cutting event hosted by the Chamber of Commerce at our downtown headquarters.
On June 6, the festivities continue with a special TVFCU birthday celebration at Riverfront Nights, where members can enjoy even more giveaways, gifts and special Member Magic experiences.
And while our 90th birthday may only come once, we’re keeping the gifts going.
From May through August, Perks Members are automatically entered into weekly Summer of Magic drawings for $1,936, with additional surprises planned throughout the year.
Rooted in Community for 90 Years
For 90 years, TVFCU has helped create magic moments that become part of our members’ stories.
Director of Community Engagement Tammy Zumbrun, one of TVFCU’s longest-tenured employees, has lived that story firsthand. As a child, she attended TVFCU annual meetings and later returned to help create those same memorable experiences for members while building milestones of her own along the way.
As Tammy puts it, “The employees here are like extended family… TVFCU definitely feels like home to me.”
That sense of belonging and local connection is one of the many things we’re celebrating as we mark 90 years. For generations, TVFCU has been more than a financial institution—it has been a trusted part of the community and a partner in helping people pursue their goals.
One of the biggest financial goals someone can have is homeownership, and we strive to make that experience as easy and affordable as possible. One member, Chandler C., said that despite buying a home being a complicated process, “TVFCU was right there able to answer questions and made it very easy.”
The local business community has also benefited from TVFCU’s efforts. Sarah Mattson, senior director of economic development for River City Company, recalls seeing firsthand how difficult it could be for early-stage businesses to access funding and later watching TVFCU launch programs like the Idea Leap Loan Program to help make those opportunities more accessible.
As she put it, “I could see how important this program was going to be for our community.”
And it has been. Since launching the Idea Leap Loan Program, TVFCU has helped approximately 250 small businesses pursue their dreams by providing funding to businesses that are often overlooked by other lenders. By investing in early-stage and growing businesses, TVFCU helps turn promising ideas into thriving local businesses.
For 90 years, TVFCU has been part of moments big and small, helping families, supporting local businesses and building stronger communities along the way.
Julie Edwards, host of “3 Plus You” on Local 3 News, summed it up best:
“I often say that the ‘C’ in TVFCU stands for community, because that’s what I think of when I think of TVFCU.”
As we celebrate this milestone, Director of Corporate Engagement Marcus Cade-Johnson, who helped lead TVFCU’s 90th anniversary celebrations, reflected on what this moment means.
“We are honored and excited to celebrate our 90th anniversary, but this milestone belongs just as much to our members and community as it does to us,” Cade-Johnson said.
Happy Birthday, TVFCU. This one’s for our members.
