TVFCU Celebrates International Credit Union Day

Abbey Butte

On Thursday, Oct. 15, credit unions around the world celebrate International Credit Union Day. Observed since 1948, the day recognizes the members, employees and volunteers who make credit unions work in their communities.

Nearly 420 million people in 93 countries belong to credit unions and other financial cooperatives, according to the World Council of Credit Unions. Unlike most banks, credit unions are not-for-profit and can use their earnings to lower fees, offer competitive rates and improve services for members.

How TVFCU serves members and communities

TVFCU is proud to be part of this worldwide movement. As we mark 90 years in the Tennessee Valley, we’re continuing to make banking easier for members. They can visit one of our 29 branches, speak with a live teller through an interactive teller machine or open an account over secure video. YOUR$ Digital Banking lets them deposit checks, pay bills, manage cards and monitor their credit from a phone or computer.

Through Idea Leap, TVFCU has awarded nearly $1.1 million in grants to local small businesses. The next competition will award $300,000 in 2027, and applications are open until 5 p.m. ET Oct. 26.

TVFCU also offers free financial education and supports nonprofits, school programs and community events throughout our 17-county service area. That includes familiar gatherings like TVFCU Riverfront Nights, Used Car Night with the Chattanooga Lookouts and the Hamilton County Fair, alongside local festivals, arts events and fundraisers across Southeast Tennessee and Northwest Georgia.

International Credit Union Day celebrates the “People Helping People” philosophy shared by credit unions worldwide. To our members, thank you for helping us put it to work in the Tennessee Valley.
